Vanderbilt University researchers have uncovered that breakfast hormones, particularly glucagon, play a crucial role in how the body manages blood sugar throughout the day, potentially impacting treatment strategies for type 2 diabetes.
Vanderbilt University researchers say the morning meal may have a longer reach than many people realise, helping shape how the body handles blood sugar well into the afternoon. In work published in Frontiers in Endocrinology, the team found that the hormone glucagon can leave the liver less able to store glucose at a later meal, even when insulin and blood sugar levels are the same.
The study adds a new layer to the long-observed “second-meal effect”, the idea that what happens at breakfast influences the body’s response to lunch and beyond. Insulin is usually seen as the key hormone in this process because it helps the liver take up and store glucose. But the Vanderbilt researchers found that elevated glucagon in the morning also created a kind of metabolic memory, making the liver less effective at holding on to sugar hours later.
According to the university’s report on the study, the effect appeared to be linked to lower levels of glucokinase, an enzyme that helps the liver capture glucose. Instead of storing sugar, the liver kept releasing it into the bloodstream. The finding suggests glucagon is not simply insulin’s opposite, but part of the machinery that determines how the body reacts to later meals.
That matters most for people with type 2 diabetes, where blood glucose can rise through the day even when early readings appear stable. Earlier research has shown that breakfast itself can blunt later glucose spikes: a study in Diabetes Care found that eating in the morning sharply reduced the rise in blood sugar after lunch, while another trial reported that skipping breakfast led to worse post-meal glucose control later in the day. Other studies have also suggested that the composition of breakfast matters, with higher-protein meals producing smaller glucose surges than carbohydrate-heavy options.
The Vanderbilt team said the work may eventually support treatments that target both insulin and glucagon pathways, rather than focusing on insulin alone. For now, the study strengthens a simple but important point: breakfast is not just the day’s first meal, but part of the body’s blood-sugar planning.
