Indian study shows lacto-vegetarian time-restricted eating improves blood sugar control in women with type 2 diabetes

A new trial from India demonstrates that combining a lacto-vegetarian diet with a 14-hour daily eating window significantly enhances blood sugar management and weight loss in women with type 2 diabetes, highlighting potential for adaptable dietary strategies.

A study from India has found that combining a lacto-vegetarian diet with a 14-hour daily eating window was linked with better blood sugar control, lower insulin resistance and weight loss in women with type 2 diabetes over 24 weeks. The trial, published as an article in press in Nutrition & Diabetes, adds to a growing body of evidence that time-restricted eating may be a practical option for some people with diabetes, particularly when it can be adapted to familiar food patterns and daily routines.

Researchers enrolled 96 women aged 25 to 60 who had lived with type 2 diabetes for at least a year and were already on stable oral medication. Ninety completed the study. Women in the intervention group followed a lacto-vegetarian plan that restricted eating to a 10-hour window each day, while the control group received usual diabetes care. The diet drew on traditional ingredients, with protein making up 15% to 20% of energy intake, fat 20% to 25%, and carbohydrates 50% to 55%, mainly from whole grains and other fibre-rich foods.

At the end of the trial, the women on the combined programme showed clearer metabolic gains than those receiving standard care. HbA1c, a marker of longer-term glucose control, fell only in the intervention group. Weight also dropped from 76.25 kg to 70.93 kg, while it rose slightly in the control group. Measures of fasting insulin and insulin resistance improved as well, and lipid levels moved in a favourable direction. The authors said the largest effect was seen in HbA1c, suggesting a meaningful improvement in day-to-day glucose management.

The intervention group also reported eating fewer calories and more fibre over time, alongside a shift towards a higher share of protein and a lower share of carbohydrates and fat. The study was generally well tolerated, with no serious adverse events. Some participants experienced mild problems such as headache, tiredness, constipation and low blood sugar, but most said they felt more energetic, clearer-headed and better able to control their appetite.

The findings fit with a wider scientific picture that has been building around time-restricted eating. A randomised trial published in PubMed found that it was non-inferior to individualised dietetic advice for lowering HbA1c over four months in adults at risk of type 2 diabetes, while other studies have suggested benefits for pancreatic beta-cell function, weight loss and fasting glucose. A systematic review and meta-analysis published this year also reported improvements in fasting glucose, HbA1c and blood sugar time-in-range. Even so, the Indian study had clear limits: it was small, lasted only 24 weeks, relied on close nutritionist support and included only women from clinics in Pune, which means the results may not translate easily to men or to broader populations.
