Brighton and Sussex Medical School has opened applications for a postgraduate certificate aimed at enhancing diabetes expertise among frontline clinicians, with flexible modules focused on diagnosis, treatment, and service improvement.
Applications are open for a postgraduate certificate designed to deepen diabetes expertise among primary care professionals, with Brighton and Sussex Medical School promoting the course as advanced training for clinicians working at the frontline of diagnosis and long-term management. The Diabetes in Primary Care PGCert is aimed at GPs, GP trainees, practice nurses, community nurses and pharmacists, and the school says early career diabetes nurse specialists, podiatrists and public health doctors are also welcome.
Led by Dr David Lipscomb, a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the course combines teaching on the complications of diabetes, lifestyle interventions, current treatment options and insulin management. Brighton and Sussex Medical School says it also places emphasis on evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety and service development in clinical settings.
According to the school’s course information, the qualification is built around two core 20-credit master’s-level modules, Diabetes Practice in Primary Care and Injectable Management, Therapeutics and Monitoring in Primary Care, plus one optional professional module. The programme can also be taken more flexibly, with the core modules available separately as continuing professional development for those who do not want to work towards the full certificate.
The course is intended to support clinicians caring for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in primary care, where demand for specialist knowledge continues to grow. External listings for the programme say it also includes teaching on diagnosis, pathophysiology and the wider organisational and policy context of diabetes services, with an emphasis on improving the design, delivery and cost-effectiveness of care. Brighton and Sussex Medical School says alumni of the school or its constituent universities may be eligible for a fee discount.
