The FDA has approved Abbott’s Libre Duo 10 Day, a groundbreaking wearable sensor that continuously tracks both blood glucose and ketone levels, offering earlier warning of diabetic ketoacidosis for users with diabetes aged two and above.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised Abbott’s Libre Duo 10 Day, a wearable sensor it describes as the first in the country to monitor blood glucose and ketone levels continuously at the same time. The device is cleared for people with diabetes aged two and older, and the regulator said it is intended to give users earlier warning of diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA, a potentially life-threatening complication. The system delivers minute-by-minute glucose readings and alerts wearers if ketone levels pass a set threshold.
Abbott says the sensor is designed to sit on the upper arm and work as part of its Libre digital health platform, allowing data to be shared with caregivers and healthcare professionals. The company also says the device is built to work with leading automated insulin delivery systems, which could make it easier to fold ketone monitoring into day-to-day diabetes care.
The approval matters because ketone checks are usually done with separate test strips or blood tests, which give only a snapshot rather than an ongoing picture. By combining the two readings in one wearable, the device may help users spot rising ketones sooner and better judge whether their risk of DKA is increasing. TechRadar reported that Abbott has not yet given a firm U.S. launch date, saying only that the product is “coming soon”.
For families and adults managing type 1 diabetes in particular, the potential appeal is simplicity as much as novelty. The FDA said the technology could improve safety by making it easier to detect warning signs before they become an emergency, while Abbott has framed the system as part of a broader shift towards more connected diabetes management.
