Breakthrough T1D launches international marathon season to accelerate diabetes research funding

Breakthrough T1D announces its 2026-27 run season, leveraging major international races to boost awareness and funding for type 1 diabetes research, including innovative support options like the ‘My Run’ programme.

Breakthrough T1D has launched its 2026-27 run season, using a slate of major international races to raise money and awareness for type 1 diabetes research. The organisation, formerly known as JDRF, said the programme is intended to bring supporters together around its broader push to speed up treatments, prevention and a cure for the disease.

The season will include 10 headline events, among them the Sydney Marathon on August 30, the Berlin Marathon on September 27, the Chicago Marathon on October 11 and the New York City Marathon on November 1. The schedule also extends into 2027 with races in Tokyo, London and Cape Town, underlining the charity’s effort to keep fundraising visible across multiple continents.

Alongside the standard race entries, Breakthrough T1D is again promoting a “My Run” option, which lets participants set their own distance, route and format. The group says the model is designed for runners who want to support the cause without signing up for a major marathon, whether they join a local event or complete the effort independently.

The launch also fits into a broader calendar of Breakthrough T1D fundraising and advocacy activity. Event listings on its regional websites point to walks and rides in the US, Canada and Australia over the coming months, while the organisation is also preparing a clinical and research congress in Philadelphia in October that will gather scientists, clinicians and industry leaders to discuss advances in diabetes care.
