A recent 12-week trial indicates that incorporating three servings of full-fat dairy into a balanced diet does not adversely affect weight, body composition, or metabolic markers in adults with overweight or obesity, challenging previous assumptions about dairy fat and health.
A new trial in adults with overweight and obesity suggests that three daily servings of full-fat dairy can be folded into a generally healthy diet for 12 weeks without clear short-term harm to body weight, body composition, blood lipids or energy metabolism, according to the study published in The Journal of Nutrition. The research tested whether whole milk, Greek yoghurt and cheese could be added within a Canada Food Guide-style eating pattern without worsening common metabolic markers.
The study split participants into three groups: one followed a low-dairy plan with a 500 calorie daily energy restriction, another replaced 500 calories with three servings of full-fat dairy, and a third added the same dairy servings ad libitum, without being told to cut back elsewhere. Across the 12-week period, the authors reported no significant adverse changes in weight, composition, resting metabolism or blood lipids.
The ad libitum group drew particular attention because it showed only a small rise in body weight and a reduction in systolic blood pressure, which the study authors and secondary summaries present as a potentially favourable sign of dietary compensation. Still, the broader result was not that full-fat dairy produced dramatic benefit, but that it did not obviously derail short-term health measures when included in a structured diet.
Taken together, the findings support a narrower conclusion than some of the more enthusiastic summaries suggest: full-fat dairy appears capable of fitting into a healthy eating plan without immediate metabolic penalty in this group, but the trial does not prove long-term safety or superiority over lower-fat alternatives.
