Type 1 diabetes is a long-term condition in which the pancreas makes little or no insulin, leaving the body unable to move glucose from the bloodstream into cells for energy. Johns Hopkins Medicine, the CDC, Mayo Clinic, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and Cleveland Clinic all describe it as a chronic illness that requires ongoing insulin treatment and careful day-to-day management. Without that support, blood sugar can rise to harmful levels and, over time, increase the risk of damage to the eyes, kidneys, heart and feet.
The condition is typically managed with insulin therapy and regular monitoring. The Diabetes Care Community says people can track blood glucose with a finger-prick meter or a continuous glucose monitor, which measures levels throughout the day without repeated finger sticks. For many adults, it cites a pre-meal target of 4.0 to 7.0 mmol/L and a reading of 5.0 to 10.0 mmol/L about two hours after meals. It also notes that time in range, the proportion of the day spent within target, should usually be above 70%.
Monitoring is meant to guide treatment rather than serve as a one-size-fits-all scorecard. The Diabetes Care Community says blood glucose should generally be checked at least as often as insulin is taken, though the schedule may change as control improves or worsens. It advises people to work with their diabetes care team to set goals that match their treatment plan, lifestyle and individual needs.
Doctors and patient organisations also stress that type 1 diabetes is not managed by insulin alone. The CDC says regular health check-ups and day-to-day habits remain part of care, while Mayo Clinic and WebMD point to the importance of lifestyle management alongside insulin and glucose monitoring. In practice, the aim is steady control, fewer complications and a treatment routine that can be sustained over the long term.
