Latin American first as Paraguayan diabetes congress emphasises new treatments and young researcher platforms

The Paraguayan Society of Diabetology hosts its fourth biennial congress in Asunción, focusing on innovative treatments, obesity, and youth engagement in diabetes care, with international experts and practical training sessions.

The Paraguayan Society of Diabetology has unveiled the IV Paraguayan Congress of Diabetes and Cardiometabolic Diseases, a four-day scientific meeting that will run in Asunción from September 8 to 11, with the main sessions taking place at the Yacht and Golf Club Paraguayo from September 9 to 11. According to Popular and local coverage from La Nación and Última Hora, organisers expect more than 1,000 health professionals from Paraguay and across the region. The congress is being framed around the theme of transforming cardiometabolic health, with a focus on obesity and diabetes.

The programme will centre on recent diabetes guidance, including the ADA 2026 recommendations, along with newer treatments based on GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP therapies. It will also cover obesity care, cardiovascular prevention and two specialist additions: the first Latin American forum on metabolic hepatic steatosis and the first symposium on diabetes and obesity in children and adolescents. The organisers say speakers will include leaders of scientific societies from several countries, as well as representatives of the International Diabetes Federation and the Latin American Diabetes Association.

Beyond the main lectures, the congress will keep its scientific competition, giving residents and younger professionals a platform to present original research and clinical cases before national and international judges. A separate SPD Educa section is aimed at students and will reward infographics and audiovisual work designed for health education. The event will also include practical training on diabetic foot, a complication that remains one of the most serious consequences of diabetes and a major cause of non-traumatic amputation.

A separate activity, organised by Laboratorios Indufar, will form part of the congress’s physical-activity day. The “Movete Por Vos” walk is scheduled for Thursday, September 10, at 5 p.m. at the Yacht and Golf Club Paraguayo and is intended to promote movement, awareness and healthier habits. The society says regular exercise remains a cornerstone of both the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. It also notes that diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases are among the leading causes of death in Paraguay and worldwide, and that the congress has been held every two years since 2004 with backing from national and international scientific groups and the health ministry.
