Smart insulin system gives Warangal teenager more freedom from type 1 diabetes routine

A hybrid closed-loop pump and glucose sensor have helped a 14-year-old boy manage his diabetes with fewer manual adjustments and greater confidence at school and during activities.

A 14-year-old boy from Warangal has been able to manage his type 1 diabetes more confidently after doctors at KIMS Cuddles in Secunderabad introduced an advanced insulin pump and glucose monitoring system, according to Telangana Today.

The boy had struggled with the rigid routine of insulin injections and the worry of overnight lows, which made it harder to balance treatment with school, sport and social life. Dr Kishore Baske, a paediatric endocrinologist at KIMS Cuddles, said the new approach has helped improve glucose control while giving the teenager more freedom in day-to-day activities.

The system used in his care is the Medtronic MiniMed 780G hybrid closed-loop insulin pump paired with the Guardian 4 continuous glucose monitoring sensor. Medtronic says the device automatically checks glucose levels and adjusts insulin delivery every five minutes, using SmartGuard technology to help reduce both highs and lows. The company says the system is approved for people aged 7 and above with type 1 diabetes, and the US Food and Drug Administration describes it as a device that can also suspend insulin when glucose is too low or predicted to fall too low.

Medtronic also says the pump can be set to different glucose targets and includes meal-detection features that may deliver correction doses if carbohydrates are miscounted or missed. In practice, that automation is meant to ease the burden of constant manual adjustments, which can be especially valuable for children and teenagers trying to keep pace with school, sport and family life while living with a lifelong condition.
