Illinois Governor JB Pritzker shares details of his two-year journey combining daily exercise and GLP-1 medication that led to an 80-pound weight loss, driven by family history and health concerns.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has described a health overhaul that has seen him lose 80 pounds, or about 36 kilogrammes, over more than two years, combining daily exercise with a GLP-1 medicine that he says has been central to the change. In an interview with Chicago media, Pritzker said the results have been so gradual that he only fully appreciated them when he looked back at older photographs and video.
Pritzker said his routine depends on the weather and his travel schedule. On clear days, he takes long morning walks along the Lake Michigan shoreline, often covering several miles and sometimes stopping to chat with runners and other pedestrians. When rain keeps him indoors, he uses a recumbent exercise bike in his office, while business trips are filled with whatever equipment is available, including treadmills, ellipticals and hotel gyms. He also said he hikes with his son and plays tennis with his daughter.
The governor’s focus on weight and heart health has been shaped by family history as much as by personal experience. His father died of a heart attack at 39, and Pritzker has said that history made him think seriously about cardiovascular risk. He has also said he long believed his obesity was driven in part by genetics, describing himself as someone who had long struggled with weight despite routine medical check-ups.
What changed more recently was a diagnosis of prediabetes that later developed into type 2 diabetes when he was 58, according to the accounts he has given in recent interviews. After that, he began taking insulin and later added a GLP-1 drug, a class of medicines that has become widely used for diabetes treatment and weight loss. Pritzker said the medication helped quiet what he called the constant “food noise” around eating, and made it easier to sustain the habits that support his health.
Pritzker has pushed back against the idea that his weight loss is about politics. CBS reported that when asked whether the transformation was connected to any presidential ambitions, he did not dwell on national politics and instead emphasised the personal benefits of treatment. NBC Chicago reported that he has said he plans to seek re-election as governor, while also saying that, for him, the combination of exercise and medication is not “cheating” but a medically necessary step that has improved how he feels and what he can do.
