Emerging research highlights emerging metabolic, digestive and cardiovascular benefits of pulses, though more human trials are needed to confirm their full potential.
Pulses have fed people for millennia, but researchers are still refining what they do inside the body. A 2026 review published in The Conversation article pulled together human, laboratory and animal evidence on dried legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, beans and peas, suggesting they may influence digestion, blood sugar, cholesterol and appetite in several useful ways.
One of the clearest effects appears to be in the gut. Pulses contain fibre and other carbohydrates that are not fully broken down before reaching the large intestine, where they are fermented by microbes. That process can produce short-chain fatty acids, compounds linked with gut lining health and metabolic function. The evidence so far is promising, but much of it still comes from non-human studies, so scientists say longer trials in people are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Cleveland Clinic and the US National Pulse Association both describe beans and other pulses as rich in fibre and prebiotic compounds that support digestive health.
Pulses may also help blunt spikes in blood sugar after meals. A review of 65 clinical trials involving more than 2,000 adults found that eating pulses reduced post-meal rises in blood glucose. Their fibre, starch structure and intact cell walls appear to slow digestion. There is also some evidence of longer-term benefits, especially in people with type 2 diabetes, though much of that research was judged to be low-certainty. Separate nutrition summaries from the National Pulse Association and Healthline likewise describe chickpeas and other pulses as low-glycaemic foods that can support steadier blood sugar levels.
Heart health is another area where pulses seem to offer modest gains. A 2024 review of 24 trials found small reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol after legume consumption. LDL, or low-density lipoprotein, is the form of cholesterol most closely tied to plaque build-up in arteries. The changes reported were not large enough to treat high cholesterol on their own, but they do fit with the broader view, reflected in Cleveland Clinic, that beans can be part of a heart-healthy diet.
Pulses may also make meals more filling. A systematic review found that people often felt fuller after eating them, although that did not always lead to eating less later. Their nutritional value can also depend on preparation. Pulses naturally contain phytate, which can limit absorption of minerals such as iron and zinc, but soaking and sprouting may improve availability. Beyond nutrition, pulses have environmental advantages too: as legumes, they work with soil bacteria to capture nitrogen, reducing the need for synthetic fertiliser. That helps explain why they feature in many public-health and sustainability recommendations, from vegetarian and Mediterranean diets to guidance on diabetes and cardiovascular risk.
