Groundbreaking research reveals even modest daily consumption of processed meats and sugary beverages significantly raises the risk of chronic diseases, challenging previous notions of safety thresholds.
A study published in Nature Medicine has added to evidence that even small, regular servings of processed meat may carry health risks, linking them to higher rates of type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. The research, based on more than 60 earlier publications on diet and health, found that daily intake of as little as about 50 grams of processed meat was associated with an 11% higher risk of type 2 diabetes and a 7% higher risk of bowel cancer.
The findings matter because the amounts involved are modest: roughly one sausage or a few slices of salami. According to the researchers, the pattern was seen even at lower levels of consumption, suggesting there may be no clearly safe threshold for people who eat processed meat regularly. The study also pointed to compounds formed during processing and cooking, including nitrites and substances created by high heat, as possible contributors to inflammation and cancer risk.
The same analysis found a similar pattern for sugar-sweetened drinks. People who drank about 350 ml of sugary lemonade a day had an 8% higher risk of type 2 diabetes, the authors said. Separate reviews published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information and in the Journal of Diabetes Investigation have also reported that higher intake of sugar-sweetened beverages is linked with a greater risk of type 2 diabetes, reinforcing the broader concern around sugary drinks.
Nutrition specialist Guenther Kunle said the strongest diets are built around foods that have undergone as little processing as possible, such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts and fermented dairy products. He argued that the issue is not one food in isolation but the cumulative effect of repeated habits: small departures from a healthy pattern, when they become routine, can add up over time and raise the risk of chronic disease.
