A new study finds that children and adolescents who shift from overweight to a normal body-mass index may significantly reduce their risk of developing clinical type 1 diabetes, highlighting the potential impact of lifestyle factors in early disease management.
A new study from Baylor College of Medicine suggests that for people already showing early signs of type 1 diabetes, moving from overweight or obesity into the normal body-mass index range was linked to a sharply lower chance of progressing to clinical disease. The research, published in Diabetes Care, followed 833 participants in TrialNet and found that those who reached a normal BMI had about a 48.4% lower risk of developing clinical type 1 diabetes than those who remained overweight or obese, according to the journal article and PubMed summary.
The effect was most pronounced in younger people. The strongest associations were seen in boys under 12 and girls aged 12 to 17, while the link was not clear in adults. That fits with earlier Diabetes Care research showing that excess body mass can accelerate progression towards type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents, and that age and sustained obesity can shape risk differently in adults.
María Redondo, the study’s lead author, said type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. She and her colleagues stressed that the new findings show association rather than proof that weight change prevents disease. In children, reaching a normal BMI does not always mean losing weight; it can also happen when growth in height outpaces weight gain.
The results add to a growing effort to identify which people with early autoimmune markers are most likely to progress, and whether simple lifestyle measures might help slow that path. TrialNet has helped identify at-risk patients years before symptoms appear, and in some cases approved therapy can already delay disease onset. The new findings, however, point to the need for a prospective intervention trial before any firm preventive conclusion can be drawn.
