The University of Florida has launched a new partnership with Google to enhance AI tools for early detection and treatment of type 1 diabetes, building on its existing research ecosystem and private-sector collaborations.
The University of Florida has unveiled a new collaboration with Google aimed at widening the use of artificial intelligence in diabetes care, building on the university’s long-running push to pair medical research with data science. According to the announcement reported by WUFT, the effort will support training for primary care doctors, develop AI-assisted glucose monitoring tools and improve the identification of people most at risk of type 1 diabetes. The project sits within UF’s broader AI and health-science ecosystem, which already includes dedicated programmes for translational AI research and diabetes work.
At the centre of the initiative is Dr Michael Haller, an endocrinologist at UF who said AI can help sort through large patient datasets to find those with the highest likelihood of developing type 1 diabetes. In the WUFT report, Haller said the system could look at clues such as family history and elevated glucose readings to flag patients earlier than traditional methods might. That approach aligns with UF Health’s wider effort to use trustworthy AI in clinical decision-making and precision medicine.
The partnership also adds to a wider institutional strategy at UF. The university’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute says its AI programme is designed to help researchers and outside partners apply machine learning to real-world health problems, while the College of Medicine has been expanding AI training for students and clinicians. UF’s Diabetes Institute, meanwhile, says it coordinates research, treatment and education across multiple specialties, giving the new Google tie-up an established base inside the university.
UF has already built experience with major private-sector technology partners. In 2020, the university launched the first NVIDIA AI Technology Centre in North America, linking advanced hardware and software to its HiPerGator supercomputer. That earlier deal focused on areas ranging from personalised medicine to food insecurity, and it shows how UF has increasingly used outside partnerships to accelerate research. If the diabetes project succeeds, Haller said, the tools could eventually be scaled beyond Florida.
