Novo Nordisk has begun distributing Awiqli across the United States, offering adults with type 2 diabetes a groundbreaking once-weekly basal insulin designed to simplify treatment and improve compliance, following regulatory approval and a nationwide rollout.
Novo Nordisk has begun rolling out Awiqli in the United States, giving adults with type 2 diabetes access to what the company describes as the world’s first once-weekly basal insulin. The treatment is designed to cut the burden of insulin use from daily injections to a single shot each week, a change the Danish drugmaker says could help patients who struggle with regular dosing. According to the company, the launch follows an earlier US approval and will make the medicine available through about 70,000 pharmacies nationwide.
The treatment, also known as insulin icodec-abae, is meant to be used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar. Novo Nordisk says Awiqli is available in a 700 units-per-millilitre pen and is intended specifically for adults with type 2 diabetes. The company says the product’s once-weekly dosing is meant to simplify diabetes management compared with traditional basal insulins, which are typically taken one or more times a day.
The launch comes after a lengthy regulatory process. Novo Nordisk had initially hoped to win approval for use in type 1 diabetes as well, but the US authorisation covers type 2 diabetes only. The company has said Awiqli is also approved in the European Union.
