Eli Lilly’s new once-daily weight management tablet, foundayo, gains UK approval, marking a significant step in the evolving market for oral GLP-1 therapies amid increasing investor interest and market competition.
Eli Lilly has won British approval for Foundayo, a once-daily tablet for weight management and type 2 diabetes, making the UK the first country in Europe to clear the drug, according to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. The decision gives the company an early foothold in a fast-growing market for GLP-1 medicines, a class of treatments that has reshaped obesity care and attracted intense investor interest. Eli Lilly shares rose more than 2% in morning trading after the announcement.
The regulator said the medicine is approved for use in Britain, but is not yet available through the National Health Service. Lilly did not immediately comment on pricing or launch timing in the UK. The company’s oral GLP-1 treatment has already gained momentum in the United States since its approval and launch in April, although it still trails Novo Nordisk’s competing pill.
Foundayo, also known as orforglipron, is designed as a once-daily oral GLP-1 receptor agonist that can be taken with or without food at any time of day. Unlike the injectable versions that dominate the market, it is a small-molecule tablet aimed at adults with obesity or with overweight and at least one related health condition, alongside diet and exercise.
Clinical trial data cited in the approval package showed that patients taking the highest dose lost about 11% of their body weight, or roughly 25 pounds, over 72 weeks. The result is likely to strengthen the case for oral treatments as the next battleground in the obesity drug market, where convenience and tolerability are becoming as important as raw efficacy.
