Emerging research reveals that when and what type of fruit is eaten, along with meal timing, can significantly affect blood glucose levels, especially for those with type 2 diabetes. The findings highlight the importance of personalised approaches to fruit consumption within a balanced diet.
New research suggests fruit is not a one-size-fits-all food when it comes to blood sugar. While it does not need to be eaten at a fixed hour to fit into a healthy diet, studies indicate that when fruit is eaten in relation to a meal, and whether it comes before or after other foods, can affect the body’s glucose response, especially for people with type 2 diabetes.
A study published in Nutrition & Diabetes by researchers at the Catholic University of Korea found that meal timing and how calories are spread through the day were linked to fluctuations in blood glucose even among healthy young adults. The research followed 96 people aged 18 to 27 for 14 days with continuous glucose monitors. It found that later breakfasts and heavier evening meals were associated with greater glucose variability and higher peaks after eating, suggesting that the structure of daily meals may matter as much as the foods themselves.
Other studies have focused more directly on fruit. Research by scientists at the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research, published in Current Developments in Nutrition, found that eating kiwifruit about 30 minutes before a starchy meal cut the post-meal glucose spike by about 47% compared with eating the starch first. Earlier work has pointed in the same direction: a 2016 trial found strawberries taken before a meal lowered post-meal glucose, while a study in healthy young men reported that eating apple before a meal increased satiety and reduced later energy intake.
Evidence in people with diabetes is more mixed, but still suggests timing can matter. A 2024 trial involving 48 people with type 2 diabetes, published in Clinical Nutrition Open Science, found that the effects of fruit order varied by fruit type. Low-glycaemic fruit appeared to offer some benefits when eaten before the main meal, while moderate- and high-glycaemic fruit showed different patterns, and fasting blood sugar did not change clearly with order alone. A 2023 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Endocrinology also concluded that fruit can play a role in blood sugar control in diabetes, but results depend on the type of fruit and the wider diet.
Overall, the research does not support a single best time for everyone to eat fruit. Instead, it points to the importance of portion size, fruit type, whether the fruit is whole or processed, and what else is on the plate. Whole fruit also brings fibre, which slows carbohydrate absorption compared with juices and other processed forms. For now, the science suggests that fruit should remain part of a balanced diet rather than something to avoid in the evening or after meals, though larger studies are still needed to define the best approach for different people.
