Access to private gardens and parks linked to lower type 2 diabetes risk, study finds

Research from the University of Queensland reveals that proximity to private gardens and parks may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, highlighting the importance of green spaces in city planning for public health.

A study from the University of Queensland suggests that access to private gardens and nearby parks may be linked with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, adding to growing evidence that urban green space can have measurable health effects. Researchers examined data from more than 19,000 people in the UK Biobank and looked at greenery around their homes, including domestic gardens and parks within 800 metres.

According to the findings published in BMC Public Health, people with relatively large garden cover had a 6.8% lower likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes than those without it. Living near several public parks was also associated with a 5.7% lower risk.

The research team said the connection may be explained by a mix of factors, including more physical activity, more time spent outdoors, better mental wellbeing and higher vitamin D exposure. They also suggested that contact with natural environments could influence gut microbes and immune function, although that remains a developing area of study.

Chinonso Odiabat, the lead researcher, said the results underline the need to give public health greater weight in city design. Previous studies published in BMC Public Health and elsewhere have also linked greener neighbourhoods with lower diabetes risk, especially among older adults, while separate University of Queensland research has found associations between garden exposure and reduced risk of some obesity-related cancers. Together, the findings support the view that parks, gardens and other green spaces may be more than a visual amenity: they may be part of the public health infrastructure of future cities.
