Rajasthan enhances diabetes care with AI-driven digital health expansion

Rajasthan has expanded its Mission Madhuhari diabetes programme by integrating artificial intelligence and digital tools, aiming to improve early detection, patient follow-up, and long-term outcomes, especially in rural and underserved communities.

Rajasthan has widened its Mission Madhuhari diabetes programme by adding artificial intelligence and digital health tools in a bid to sharpen early detection, improve patient follow-up and reduce long-term complications, according to details released by the state government. The expansion forms part of a broader push to make chronic disease care more data-driven, with particular emphasis on patients in rural and underserved communities.

Under the upgraded system, health workers will use AI-assisted risk assessment, electronic records, digital patient tracking and live monitoring dashboards to follow patients through treatment. The idea is to flag higher-risk cases earlier, keep watch on adherence to care plans and prompt quicker clinical intervention where needed, rather than relying on fragmented or delayed reporting.

The programme will sit within Rajasthan’s wider Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission framework, which is designed to link patients, practitioners and health facilities through a shared digital infrastructure. Government figures show the state has created more than 7.19 crore ABHA accounts and registered over 1.03 lakh healthcare professionals and 52,600-plus health facilities, putting it among the strongest performers nationally on digital health adoption. The national mission itself is intended to create continuity of care through interoperable records and a more connected healthcare ecosystem.

Rajasthan has already begun testing artificial intelligence in other parts of public healthcare. Officials have cited the state’s MadhuNetrAI diabetic retinopathy screening pilot, which screened more than 1,000 patients in its first phase, alongside wider use of digital platforms across primary care. The state says 7,680 Community Health Officers have been brought on to digital systems and more than 1.62 lakh outpatient consultations have been recorded through integrated health platforms, underlining the pace of adoption.

The expansion comes against the backdrop of India’s heavy diabetes burden. The International Diabetes Federation says the country has more than 101 million adults living with the condition, making better screening and long-term monitoring increasingly important. Rajasthan’s latest move suggests the state is betting that AI, digital records and interoperable systems can improve chronic disease management while offering a model for other public health programmes.
