The question of which sweetener deserves a place in the pantry has moved well beyond taste. Stevia and monk fruit are both popular zero-calorie options, but they are not identical. Healthline notes that stevia comes from the leaves of the Stevia plant and has a slightly more herbal aftertaste, while monk fruit is derived from a melon-like fruit and is often described as cleaner-tasting. Both can help people cut back on sugar without adding calories, yet many retail products are blends, so the label matters as much as the sweetener itself.

Allulose has emerged as one of the more intriguing newer alternatives. According to Healthline and the Cleveland Clinic, it occurs naturally in small amounts in foods such as figs and raisins, tastes much like sugar, and has minimal effect on blood glucose. That has made it appealing for people who want something that behaves more like table sugar in cooking but without the same metabolic hit. In practical terms, the best choice depends on what you want from a sweetener. If the priority is avoiding blood sugar spikes, monk fruit, stevia and allulose are all stronger candidates than conventional sugar. If the priority is taste and texture, allulose may feel closest to sugar, while monk fruit and stevia can work well in drinks and lighter recipes. The main caution across all three is product formulation: some blends contain extra fillers or added sweeteners, which can undo some of the benefit.
