Research indicates that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, not only helps control blood sugar and weight but also significantly reduces the risk of heart attacks and serious cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, signalling a potential paradigm shift in diabetes management.
A new analysis suggests that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, may do more than improve blood sugar and weight control in people with type 2 diabetes. According to The Independent, researchers found the drug was linked with a lower risk of heart attack and other serious cardiovascular events in patients who already had heart disease.
The study followed almost 53,000 people with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, comparing those who started Mounjaro with patients treated with sitagliptin, another widely used diabetes medicine. After one year, major adverse cardiovascular events occurred in 2.9% of the Mounjaro group, versus 4.4% among those taking sitagliptin. The researchers said that translated into a lower risk of heart attack by about a third, although they did not see a meaningful difference in stroke rates.
The analysis also suggested broader benefits. Researchers reported fewer hospital admissions and fewer deaths from any cause among patients receiving tirzepatide, alongside the reduction in cardiac risk. The findings add to a growing body of evidence that GLP-1-based medicines, a class that includes semaglutide and tirzepatide, may protect the heart as well as support weight loss and glucose control.
That broader picture has been reinforced by other recent studies. A report from the Technical University of Munich and Harvard Medical School, as summarised by ScienceDaily, found GLP-1-based drugs were associated with lower rates of major cardiovascular events in real-world insurance data. Eli Lilly has also said a head-to-head trial showed Mounjaro reduced the combined risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke compared with Trulicity, while a systematic review of real-world studies and another meta-analysis of randomised trials both pointed to cardiovascular benefits across the class. For patients with type 2 diabetes and existing heart disease, the evidence is increasingly pointing in the same direction: these medicines may offer protection beyond blood sugar control.
