Chrissy Metz responds to criticism over her use of GLP-1 medication, emphasising her focus on health and personal wellbeing amid a backdrop of public opinion and past experiences.
Chrissy Metz is pushing back against criticism of her use of GLP-1 medication, saying public scrutiny comes with being visible but should not outweigh a personal health decision. In an interview with Us Weekly, the actor said people will always have opinions about appearance and lifestyle choices, and that she has chosen to focus on what is right for her rather than second-guessing herself.
Metz, who became widely known for playing Kate Pearson in NBC’s “This Is Us”, said she was once deeply sceptical about GLP-1 drugs. That changed after she learned more about them, spoke with friends and weighed the potential benefits for her own health. Us Weekly reported that she said the treatment has brought manageable side effects and noticeable improvements in her lab results, mobility and sleep.
She has also said the medication has helped quiet intrusive thoughts about food, and that her decision was rooted in health rather than vanity. The Daily Beast reported that Metz has framed the change as part of a broader effort to improve her energy, stamina and long-term wellbeing, including continuing to perform in Broadway productions.
Metz’s view of the issue has also been shaped by family experience. According to Us Weekly and The Blast, she has spoken about her father’s death from sepsis after gastric bypass surgery, a loss that made her think differently about her own health risks and whether a different medical approach might have helped him. That history has made the conversation more than a debate over weight loss; for her, it is tied to longevity and prevention.
Her willingness to talk openly also reflects a longer personal history with body image and abuse. In earlier interviews reported by TV Insider and WebMD, Metz described being shamed about her weight as a child, including by her stepfather, and said therapy helped her work through the emotional damage. She has said that sharing her GLP-1 experience is meant to encourage a more honest discussion about health choices, while making clear that what works for one person may not be right for another.
