BioLife has secured a US patent for its groundbreaking effervescent oral peptide delivery technology, potentially transforming treatments for obesity and diabetes as demand for oral therapies rises.
BioLife has secured a US patent for an effervescent oral peptide delivery platform it says could widen the path for medicines used in obesity, diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The United States Patent and Trademark Office granted Patent 12,667,605 B2 for the company’s OralMatrix technology, according to the announcement circulated by BioLife.
The patent arrives as demand for GLP-1 medicines continues to surge. BioLife said global sales of GLP-1 therapies reached about $132 billion in 2025, while the obesity drugs market was worth an estimated $42 billion. That growth has intensified interest in oral treatments, as patients and developers look for alternatives to injections.
BioLife says its approach differs from earlier oral delivery methods because it uses a dissolvable effervescent tablet to form a gastric buffer, rather than relying on coatings or absorption enhancers. The company says the platform is based on more than 35 years of experience in pharmaceutical effervescence. It also said preclinical work has shown measurable systemic exposure to semaglutide after oral dosing, although the technology remains in development and is not yet approved for clinical use.
The granted claims cover a broad range of GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide, albiglutide, exenatide and lixisenatide. BioLife said protection runs to 2042, with further patent applications pending outside the US. The broader significance lies in the continuing effort to make peptide medicines easier to take, especially as drugmakers search for next-generation options beyond today’s injectable therapies.
