A pioneering University of Illinois Chicago study indicates that limiting food intake to an 8-hour window could help some adults with Type 1 diabetes better manage blood sugar levels without immediate safety concerns. While promising, researchers advise caution and further investigation.

A University of Illinois Chicago study suggests that limiting food intake to an eight-hour window may help some adults with Type 1 diabetes improve blood sugar control without adding short-term safety risks. The work, led by kinesiology and nutrition professor Krista Varady, is the first randomised trial to test intermittent fasting in people with the condition, according to ScienceDaily’s summary of the research.

In the trial, 32 adults from the Chicago area who had Type 1 diabetes and obesity were assigned for six months to one of three approaches: time-restricted eating from noon to 8 p.m. without calorie counting, a 25% calorie cut, or no dietary change. According to the study published in Diabetes Care, the group following the eight-hour eating window recorded an average 0.5% drop in HbA1c, the blood test that reflects average glucose levels over several months.

The researchers also reported no increase in severe hypoglycaemia, or dangerously low blood sugar, and no rise in diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication that can occur when the body lacks enough insulin. The Diabetes Care paper concluded that time-restricted eating appears promising, but said larger studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.

Varady urged caution, saying people with Type 1 diabetes should not change their eating patterns without medical supervision. That warning matters because the condition, which affects fewer than 1% of Americans, already requires careful day-to-day management and can become unstable quickly if insulin dosing and food intake are not balanced properly.

The findings add to growing interest in intermittent fasting, a field in which Varady has been a leading researcher for years. Even so, the study is small and focused on a specific group of participants, so it is best seen as an early signal rather than a new standard of care.
