A recent study suggests that even a modest reduction in sleep duration can lead to weight gain and negatively impact overall health, highlighting the importance of adequate rest for long-term wellbeing.
A modest cut in sleep may do more than leave people tired the next day. A report in Liberty Times cited a study of 95 adults suggesting that trimming sleep by about 90 minutes a night for six weeks was linked to a gain of roughly 1 pound, alongside lower activity levels and more time spent sitting. The findings are a reminder that sleep loss can nudge behaviour in ways that quietly affect weight over time. According to the report, the participants normally slept seven to eight hours a night and wore wrist monitors while researchers tracked sleep, movement, body composition and hormone levels tied to appetite.
The study’s lead author, Faris Zuraikat of Columbia University, said the weight gain was small but notable because it happened over just six weeks. The same report said activity fell during the sleep-restriction phase, with sedentary time rising by an average of 17 minutes a day and by nearly 30 minutes among men and postmenopausal women. That pattern fits earlier research. A large study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that women who slept five hours or less gained more weight over 16 years than those who slept seven hours, while research in PLOS Medicine linked short sleep with lower leptin, higher ghrelin and a higher body mass index.
Kidney specialist Chiang Shou-shan, writing on Facebook, warned against treating sleeping pills as a catch-all solution for insufficient sleep. He said they do not prevent many of the complications associated with insomnia, including dementia, cardiovascular disease, sudden death and fractures. His comments also drew on newer evidence that the effects of poor sleep go beyond weight. A randomised trial in Diabetes Care found that chronic insufficient sleep reduced insulin sensitivity in women, while another study showed that circadian misalignment , a disrupted internal body clock , can worsen insulin resistance and inflammation even apart from sleep loss itself.
Other research suggests the cardiovascular system is also vulnerable. A study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that sleep deprivation activated cellular and genomic markers of inflammation, and work published in Brain, Behaviour, and Immunity linked sleep restriction with greater food intake, weight gain and inflammation in adipose tissue. Taken together, the evidence suggests that sleep is not simply about next-day alertness. It is closely tied to metabolism, blood sugar control and heart health, making regular, adequate rest a basic part of long-term prevention.
