New research suggests timing workouts with your circadian rhythm can optimise results

Emerging evidence indicates that aligning exercise with the body’s internal clock may enhance recovery, metabolism, and performance, tailored to individual biological rhythms and fitness goals.

Working out regularly remains one of the simplest ways to support health, but the case for exercise becomes more precise when timing and intensity are taken into account. NDTV’s explainer on “bio-syncing” argues that training in step with the body’s internal clock may improve recovery, fat metabolism and adaptation to harder effort. That broad idea is supported by research in the Journal of Physiology and in several recent reviews, which suggest that exercise can act as a cue for the circadian system rather than merely responding to it.

The circadian rhythm is the body’s 24-hour timing mechanism, shaping sleep, hormone release, temperature, energy and metabolism. Review evidence indexed on PubMed indicates that exercise can help regulate that clock, influencing sleep-wake cycles and hormone patterns, while timing and intensity appear to matter if the goal is better circadian alignment. Another systematic review found that evening sessions can temporarily push melatonin later and raise core body temperature, whereas repeated morning exercise may lower post-waking cortisol and support sleep quality.

That is why some experts favour morning training for people trying to build consistency or lose weight. NDTV notes that early exercise may suit those with busy schedules or strict fat-loss targets, while a review in Scientific Reports found there is no universal best hour to train. Instead, the right window depends on the outcome a person wants. Morning workouts may help with adherence and appetite control, while evening exercise can be better for power output and strength work, partly because body temperature and muscle function tend to be higher later in the day.

The science also points to individual differences. Research published in young adults found that morning exercise advanced circadian phase, while evening exercise had less effect overall; people with later chronotypes, or night owls, appeared to benefit from both time slots. A separate review on exercise physiology and circadian clocks suggests that strength and endurance themselves are influenced by daily biological rhythms, making it plausible that aligning training with natural peaks could improve performance. More recent reporting on a BMJ Open Heart study involving sedentary adults also suggested that matching exercise to chronotype may improve sleep, blood pressure, metabolic health and aerobic capacity.

Even so, timing is only part of the picture. The PubMed review and NDTV’s guidance both stress that recovery, nutrition and sleep remain essential. Exercising at the “right” hour will not compensate for poor sleep, insufficient protein or inconsistent training. For many people, the most effective routine is likely to be the one they can repeat reliably, with harder sessions placed when energy is highest and lighter work reserved for lower-energy periods. In that sense, bio-syncing is less a rigid formula than a way of making exercise work with the body rather than against it.
