Indian diabetologist V. Mohan receives Florida International University’s leadership award for advancing precision diabetes care

Indian diabetologist V. Mohan has been honoured by Florida International University with its prestigious Dr Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Leadership Award, recognising his pioneering work in personalised diabetes treatment tailored for South Asian populations.

Florida International University in Miami has presented Indian diabetologist V. Mohan with its Dr Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Leadership Award in Healthcare and Medicine, recognising decades of work in diabetes research, clinical care and public health. Medical Dialogues reported that the award was conferred on September 8, 2026, in acknowledgement of Mohan’s contribution to precision approaches in diabetes therapy.

At the ceremony, Mohan focused on the idea of precision diabetes and its particular relevance for Asian Indian and South Asian patients. He highlighted that diabetes in these populations often appears at younger ages and at lower levels of obesity than in several other groups, underscoring the need for treatment and prevention strategies tailored to different risk profiles.

According to the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene’s honorary fellows listing, Mohan is chairman and chief of diabetology at Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre in Chennai, an International Diabetes Federation Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care. The organisation says he oversees a network of 50 diabetes centres across eight Indian states and has published more than 1,370 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and review articles.

The latest honour adds to a long list of recognitions for Mohan, who has previously received awards from Emory University, the University of Michigan, Stanford University and Harvard University. His own centre says he has also been honoured by the Medical Council of India, the Indian Council of Medical Research and the American Diabetes Association, reflecting his standing in both Indian and international diabetes research.
