Hikma launches first generic semaglutide in Saudi Arabia amid pipeline expansion

Hikma Pharmaceuticals enters the booming GLP-1 market with the launch of Glucentra, the first generic semaglutide available in Saudi Arabia, signalling a strategic shift towards innovation and pipeline growth.

Hikma Pharmaceuticals has moved into the fast-growing market for GLP-1 medicines with the launch of Glucentra, a generic version of semaglutide now available to patients in Saudi Arabia. The company says it is the first generic semaglutide offered in the kingdom, a notable step for a group that has long built its business across the Middle East and North Africa and is trying to show investors it can do more than supply established injectables and off-patent drugs.

According to Hikma, Glucentra is being commercialised through an exclusive partnership for the Middle East and North Africa with OneSource Specialty Pharma. The medicine is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes and is administered once a week using a pre-filled injection pen. The launch matters because semaglutide belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists, drugs that have attracted intense global demand after proving effective in controlling blood sugar and, in some cases, supporting weight loss.

The launch comes alongside a broader effort by Hikma to put its research and development work in front of shareholders. The company has started an R&D Investor Spotlight Series, a set of presentations intended to explain how it identifies molecules, develops complex formulations and moves products from laboratory work into commercial manufacturing. That push for greater transparency suggests Hikma wants investors to view innovation as a meaningful part of its growth story, not simply a support function behind its generics and injectables franchises.

Hikma has also said its epinephrine nasal spray has moved into regulatory review in the United States, Europe and the UK. The treatment is designed for emergency use in anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reactions, and would offer a needle-free option for patients and caregivers if approved. The company has indicated that more filings could follow in additional markets, underlining a pipeline strategy that relies on a steady flow of product launches and approvals rather than a single flagship medicine.

For Hikma, the sequence of announcements points to a business trying to strengthen its position through regional commercial execution and a deeper pipeline. The company’s diversified model , spanning injectables, generics and branded medicines , has long helped it balance exposure across geographies. But in a sector where investors reward visible product momentum, the real test will be whether Glucentra gains traction in Saudi Arabia and whether the nasal spray can clear regulators outside the initial filing markets.
