Diabetes Club of Fox Valley amplifies outreach with new fundraising initiatives and community support

As it marks its fifth anniversary, the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley boosts efforts with a major gala and expanded community involvement, aiming to support research, education, and practical aid for local residents.

The Diabetes Club of Fox Valley is preparing for a fresh season of fundraising and outreach as it marks its fifth year since being founded by 15 local residents in October 2022. According to the club’s website and a report in The Voice, the group was set up to raise awareness of diabetes, support people living with the condition and direct money towards research aimed at finding a cure.

The club says it was built as a grassroots organisation for the wider Fox Valley area, with every dollar raised through dues, donations and events going back into its anti-diabetes work. Its website says that mission now includes support for the University of Chicago Medicine-Kovler Diabetes Research Centre, help for people seeking trained diabetic alert dogs and scholarships for children to attend American Diabetes Association summer camps.

Its message to the community has remained consistent: learn the signs of prediabetes, diabetes and the dangers of uncontrolled blood glucose, which can damage the eyes, heart, teeth, nerves and kidneys. The club also encourages people to use diet, exercise and annual blood testing as practical steps to reduce risk and manage the disease.

The group meets monthly from January through November on the second Wednesday at Oak Street Restaurant in North Aurora, where dinner is optional before the meeting begins. Guests are welcome, and the club continues to use those gatherings, along with public events, to draw more people into diabetes education and prevention.

Its next major fundraising event is the annual gala dinner, “Light the Way for a Cure”, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6, at the Lincoln Inn in Batavia. The evening will include Phoenixx Band, dancing, raffles, a silent auction, dinner and drinks, with tickets priced at $85 each or $800 for a table of 10. The club says anyone who buys tickets by Oct. 5 will be entered into a drawing for a $200 prize.

The club has also been broadening its local footprint through meetings, community appearances and donations. Its website says it has supported the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association with $2,400 for diabetes education, underscoring the group’s emphasis on practical help as well as awareness.
