Haywards Heath Specsavers joins UK's One Million Steps Challenge to raise awareness and funds for diabetes

The Haywards Heath Specsavers team is supporting Diabetes UK’s annual One Million Steps Challenge, encouraging community participation in a nationwide push to raise funds and spotlight diabetes prevention and management.

The Haywards Heath Specsavers team is backing Diabetes UK’s One Million Steps Challenge, joining a nationwide fundraising effort that runs from 1 July to 30 September and asks participants to log up to 1.7 million steps while raising money and awareness for people living with diabetes. Diabetes UK says the annual challenge offers three targets, with participants able to aim for 500,000, 1 million or 1.7 million steps, either on their own or as part of a team.

Jay Spiller and Rachna Patel, the store’s directors, said they were eager to take part in the campaign and wanted to help highlight the impact diabetes has on everyday life. Spiller also pointed to the connection between diabetes and sight, saying regular eye tests matter because changes linked to diabetic eye disease can sometimes be detected before symptoms are noticeable.

Diabetes UK says the challenge is open to adults, free to enter and has no minimum sponsorship requirement. The charity says walkers, runners, dancers and anyone able to add more movement into daily routines can all take part, with the money raised supporting research, care and services for people with diabetes. It also says participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship by 31 October.

The appeal comes against a wider backdrop of rising need. More than 4.7 million people in the UK are living with a diabetes diagnosis, according to the figures quoted by the Haywards Heath team, underlining the scale of a condition that can have serious long-term health consequences if not managed well.
