Curcumin shows potential in protecting diabetic rat aortas, but human applicability remains uncertain

Research at the Florida Institute of Technology suggests that curcumin, the compound in turmeric, may preserve aorta structure and function in diabetic rats, raising hopes for future vascular benefits but highlighting the need for human trials.

Researchers at the Florida Institute of Technology say curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its yellow colour, helped preserve the structure and function of the aorta in rats with type 1 diabetes, according to a report presented at the American Physiological Society summit in Minneapolis. The work has not yet been through peer review, and the authors stress that it cannot be assumed to apply to people.

Type 1 diabetes is known to raise cardiovascular risk even when blood glucose is tightly controlled, in part because long-term high blood sugar can weaken blood vessels and reduce their elasticity. In the rat study, one diabetic group received curcumin for a month while another did not, and the treated animals’ aortas more closely resembled those of healthy controls.

The researchers said the treatment appeared to act through several linked pathways, including reducing inflammation, restoring calcium activity in the vessel wall and normalising heat shock protein 70, a protein involved in protecting cells under stress. Swasti Rastogi, the study’s first author, said curcumin seems to influence several processes at once, while Alexey Kornilov said the findings point to a plausible mechanism but that dosage and delivery in humans would require separate pharmacokinetic testing.

The result adds to a wider body of preclinical and review evidence suggesting curcumin may have protective effects in diabetes, including possible benefits for kidney disease and other vascular complications. A 2024 review in PubMed described curcumin as a candidate adjunct therapy because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while other animal studies have reported improved blood vessel function and endothelial health. Even so, the central limitation remains the same: there are no human trials here, so questions about safety, effective dose and interactions with insulin or other diabetes medicines remain unanswered.
