Syai Health launches compact CGM with AI-driven insights to revolutionise diabetes management in South Africa

Syai Health unveils the Ultra CGM, a discreet 14-day glucose monitor integrated with AI-powered software to enhance user experience and decision-making for people with diabetes in South Africa.

Syai Health is seeking to win over people with diabetes with a new continuous glucose monitor that it says is compact, discreet and designed to turn raw glucose data into something easier to act on.

The Syai Ultra CGM is a 14-day sensor about the size of a South African R1 coin, according to the company’s South African material and its product pages. Syai says the device is factory-calibrated, gives minute-by-minute readings after a 30-minute warm-up period and carries an IP28 water-resistance rating. The company also says the sensor has been clinically tested with a mean absolute relative difference, or MARD, of 8.106%, a commonly used measure of CGM accuracy in which lower numbers indicate closer agreement with reference glucose measurements.

Founded in Singapore in 2016, Syai Health says it emerged from work linked to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and has built research, manufacturing and sales operations across Singapore, China and the UK. In South Africa, the device is being distributed by Ethitech, a healthcare company that says it has more than 21 years’ experience in point-of-care innovation and diabetes technology.

What sets the system apart, according to Syai, is the emphasis on software as much as hardware. The companion app offers configurable alerts, including predicted low-glucose warnings, and AI-based analysis intended to highlight trends rather than simply display numbers. It also logs meals, exercise and insulin, with options such as food photos and carbohydrate estimates, while a separate sharing function lets readings be sent to followers or healthcare teams. Syai says the app works with iPhones and Android phones, and can connect with selected smartwatches and smart insulin pens.

The company is also trying to address a familiar concern around artificial intelligence in healthcare: whether software is making decisions that should belong to patients and clinicians. Syai says the glucose reading itself always comes from the sensor, not the algorithm, and that the AI is meant to help users interpret patterns, support decisions and reduce the burden of manual calculations. The company says users can switch off AI-powered functions if they prefer.

Syai’s South African launch comes as the company says it is still in talks with medical aid providers over coverage. For now, the system is being pitched as another option in a crowded CGM market, one that aims to combine low-profile wear, app-based sharing and automated insights in a single package.
