A new study suggests that a proprietary low-dose berberine supplement may enhance GLP-1 hormone levels and metabolic health markers, offering a potential natural alternative to prescription treatments.
A small clinical trial published in the International Journal of Clinical Trials suggests that a low-dose berberine formulation may raise GLP-1, a hormone involved in appetite and glucose control, while also improving several metabolic markers.
Researchers from Zeus Hygia Life Sciences in India studied Metaberine, a proprietary berberine ingredient delivered at 200 mg a day, in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial involving 36 adults. After 14 days on the supplement, fasting GLP-1 rose by 29% and post-meal GLP-1 increased by 22%, according to the journal report.
The study also found improvements in blood sugar and cholesterol measures. Fasting glucose fell by 9.08 mg/dL on Metaberine, compared with a 1.36 mg/dL drop on placebo, while LDL cholesterol declined and HDL cholesterol increased. The trial reported no adverse events.
Berberine has long been studied for possible effects on glucose and lipid metabolism, but conventional forms are often poorly absorbed and typically require much higher daily doses. The researchers noted that earlier human studies using standard berberine at 900 mg to 1,000 mg a day had shown smaller GLP-1 increases, while dose-related side effects such as nausea, diarrhoea and constipation remain a concern. CK Nutraceuticals, the North American distributor of Metaberine, said the ingredient uses BioSOLVE, a proprietary aqueous processing method intended to improve solubility and bioavailability, allowing a lower dose to be used.
The company said additional studies are under way, including a larger human trial to confirm the GLP-1 and glucose findings and another to assess bioavailability. The research sits against a backdrop of intense consumer interest in berberine, which has drawn attention online as a so-called “natural” alternative to prescription GLP-1 medicines, even as experts continue to emphasise that the two are not interchangeable.
