Cinnamon and ginger tea's modest benefits for blood sugar undercut by limited evidence

While cinnamon and ginger are linked to health benefits, their effectiveness when consumed in tea for blood sugar regulation remains inconclusive, with research favouring extracts and supplements over beverages.

Tea with cinnamon and ginger is often promoted as a simple wellness habit, with claims that it can support digestion and help steady blood sugar. But the evidence is more nuanced than the marketing suggests, according to reporting cited by UNIAN from Verywell Health and several nutrition reviews. Both spices contain bioactive compounds, including cinnamaldehyde in cinnamon and gingerols in ginger, that have been linked to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Some research does point to a modest effect on glucose control, particularly when the spices are taken in concentrated form. Healthline says cinnamon may mimic some insulin activity and improve insulin sensitivity, while one small study found that 3 to 6 grams of ground cinnamon a day improved post-meal blood sugar in healthy adults. Separate reviews have also reported that ginger supplementation can lower fasting blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.

Still, the evidence for tea itself is weaker. UNIAN cited a study in adults with type 2 diabetes in which black tea infused with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom or saffron produced little meaningful improvement in glucose control, and neither cinnamon nor ginger clearly outperformed the comparison group. That matters because most of the stronger findings come from extracts or supplements, not from a cup of tea.

The broader health case for both spices is more convincing than the case for blood sugar alone. Healthline notes that cinnamon has been studied for possible roles in inflammation, heart health and neurological conditions, while ginger has been associated with relief from nausea, digestive discomfort and chronic pain. Even so, experts caution that common kitchen amounts are unlikely to match the doses used in research, and they do not replace established treatment for diabetes.
