Australian foodservice suppliers are finding that breakfast is no longer judged only by what a label promises. In a recent Mulberry Tree article, Anna argued that health-conscious customers are increasingly using continuous glucose monitors to see how a meal affects them in real time, which is reshaping how cafes, distributors and brand owners think about acai bowls, wellness bowls and other breakfast offerings.
That shift matters because a CGM measures the person’s response, not the product in isolation. The grain mix, yoghurt, fruit and sweeteners in a bowl all contribute to one blood glucose pattern, so a granola can no longer be assessed as a stand-alone health claim once it is eaten as part of a larger meal. The Mayo Clinic says low-glycaemic index foods are digested more slowly and tend to produce a more gradual rise in blood sugar, which helps explain why low-GI positioning has become more relevant in this market.
The Mulberry Tree piece makes the broader commercial point that a breakfast item only has to be one weak link to undermine the perception of an entire venue. Healthline has noted that many shop-bought granolas contain substantial added sugar, which can push blood sugar higher, while Prevention says granola can still fit into a blood-sugar-conscious diet if it is built from whole oats, nuts and seeds with minimal added sugar and paired with protein or healthy fats.
