Anadolu Medical Centre in Turkey has implemented a browser-based insulin infusion calculator developed with Johns Hopkins Medicine, aiming to reduce errors and streamline decision-making in critical care, marking a significant step towards digitalisation in medication management.
At Anadolu Medical Centre in Turkey, clinicians have been testing a browser-based insulin infusion calculator designed to turn a paper protocol into a step-by-step digital decision aid. The tool, developed with Johns Hopkins Medicine, is intended to reduce calculation errors and lighten the cognitive load on nurses and doctors managing insulin drips in intensive care, emergency and inpatient settings.
The hospital’s own review found 85 discrepancies between the manual protocol and the software-generated rate, but these were described as workflow differences rather than patient harms. According to the report on Healthcare in Europe, no patient injury was linked to the mismatches, and the glucose reading taken after the manually applied dose stayed within the safer range, although that does not prove the digital recommendation would have done better because only the manual dose was actually administered. Gurkan Camok, who prepared the figure for the report, said the results pointed to a medication-safety and standardisation issue that still needs prospective clinical evaluation.
The tool has now been cleared for routine use by the hospital’s Medication Management and Use Committee and Medical Directorate. Since its rollout in January 2026, about 400 nurses and the relevant physicians have used it, and roughly half responded to a post-deployment survey. Camok said users especially appreciated the quick decision path, the clear display of the recommended action and the reduced mental burden when following the protocol.
Even so, the risks are familiar ones in insulin delivery: dependence on a displayed recommendation, incorrect source data and use outside the intended patient group or in unusual clinical situations. That caution is echoed in the wider diabetes literature, where the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association have warned that insulin infusion errors can arise from pump failure, blocked infusion sets and user error, with potentially serious consequences including hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis. A UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency alert on the Accu-Chek Insight pump system likewise warned that unclear handling instructions can contribute to unintentional operation and rapid deterioration.
Anadolu Medical Centre says the software remains an internal, non-commercial tool and has not yet gone through CE marking or a formal conformity assessment under medical-device rules. Camok said any wider deployment would first require a proper classification of the software’s intended use under the relevant regulatory framework. He also listed external multi-centre validation, formal usability testing and prospective outcome monitoring as next steps, alongside safeguards such as downtime procedures, training, usage logs, version control and the continued double-check process for high-risk medicines.
