A large Danish study suggests initiating statin therapy soon after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may lower the risk of developing dementia over the following decade, highlighting potential benefits beyond cardiovascular protection.
A large Danish study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress and published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe has found that starting statins soon after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis was associated with a lower chance of developing dementia over the following decade. The researchers tracked more than 132,000 people and found that those who began treatment within a year of diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of dementia than those who never started statins, according to the society’s presentation and a report by ScienceDaily.
The findings add to a growing body of research suggesting that statins may do more than protect the heart. Science Focus reported that the benefit appeared stronger the earlier treatment began, with people starting within five years of diagnosis also showing a lower risk of dementia than non-users. Earlier meta-analyses published on PubMed and in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology have similarly linked statin use with reduced risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, although those studies did not find the same pattern for every form of cognitive decline.
Even so, the new results should be read with caution. The data show an association rather than proof that statins directly prevent dementia, and the research does not settle questions about which statins, doses or patient groups may benefit most. Some previous reviews have suggested that hydrophilic statins may be more protective for some cognitive outcomes than lipophilic drugs, but the evidence remains mixed and is not strong enough to support using statins solely for dementia prevention.
The practical message for patients with type 2 diabetes is more straightforward: statins remain an established treatment for lowering cardiovascular risk, and this study adds another possible reason not to delay them after diagnosis. The broader implication is that treatment decisions made early in the course of diabetes may have effects that extend beyond blood sugar and cholesterol control, though further research will be needed before any firm claims can be made about dementia prevention.
